Countercharge ep3: Magnus2

For our third episode, my brother and I explore Magnus2 from the Mercenaries faction. In the podcast Mike discusses how he’s gone undefeated with Magnus2 vs balanced lists but thinks it could be a bad matchup vs a dedicated gunline. We test this hypothesis with two games.

 

Game one: Magnus2 vs Kara Sloan

Magnus turn 1
Magnus turn 1. Magnus casts bullet dodger on Gallant and Escort. Everything moves up. Skirmishers make sure to stay outside move-and-shoot range of the Trenchers.

Kara Sloan turn 1. Trenchers move up first and dig in. The sniper attachment takes a pop-shot at Lynssa and actually kills her. Reinholdt then reloads and Sloan moves up behind cover, pops feat and casts Guided Fire. Her and the battlegroup manage to completely scrap the Rover and the Nomad in the center.

Magnus turn 2. Hutchuk ambushes in but is too far to move and shoot or charge so he just runs. Being down 29 points already really sucks. Magnus doesn’t think he can feat this turn without being shot off the table so instead he camps and runs back and towards the left zone. Idrians really struggle to hit the dug-in Trenchers despite having prey on them. Gorman moves up and clouds himself. The surviving Nomad charges Cyclone and leaves him with very little left and Gallant charges a Hunter and also nearly kills the warjack.

 

Kara Sloan turn 2
Kara Sloan turn 2. I decide that my best way to deal with the Nomad and Gallant are to shoot them so I move my injured Cyclone and Hunter away (allowing free strikes that kills the Cyclone). The Trenchers decide to stand still and aim and make quick work out of most of the Idrians and Gorman. With his jacks now un-engaged my remaining warjacks and Kara focus on the Gallant and kill it.

 

Magnus turn 3
Magnus turn 3. Seizing an opportunity to score, Magnus moves up and feats. The nomad move closer to engage the healthy hunter and damages it a bit. Harlan Versh kills the damaged Hunter. Orin Midwinter desperately want to chain lightning and kill the few Trenchers contesting that zone but unfortunately misses. The remaining Idrians do little but Hutchuk charges and smashes my Defender, crippling his gun arm. End of turn score 2-0 for Magnus2.

 

Kara Sloan turn 3
Kara Sloan turn 3. Kara, not wanting to give up what should be an easy win, kills Hutchuk with the injured Defender and runs the healthy Defender into the right zone. Rather than run my Trenchers who aren’t affected by the feat into the left zone I decide to kill Orin Midwinter and try and finish off the Nomad with a big CRA. Between the Trenchers and Kara Sloan, I manage to leave his Nomad with two boxes. Reinholdt, who was unaffected by the feat, runs into the left zone to contest. Score is still 2-0 for Magnus2.

 

Magnus turn 4
Magnus turn 4. Magnus keeps all the focus to himself and relies on the Nomad to finish off Reinholdt with his two initials. Harlan Versh and Magnus then decide to try and shoot Kara Sloan but accomplish little. The Idrians also fail to do anything relevant.

 

Kara Sloan turn 4
Kara Sloan turn 4. With the Defender parked in the right zone Magnus won’t be scoring any points there but the left zone is vulnerable. The Idrians decide to run charge Harlan and kill him and the few that can get into the Nomad do so while the others run to toe in the zone. The Nomad still lives. A Defender spends his turn killing an Idrian.

 

Magnus turn 5
Magnus turn 5. Desperate times call for desperate measures. Seeing a chance to pull a victory out of defeat Magnus moves close to the Trenchers and casts Obliteration. The AOE 5″ spell encompasses all of them but the rolls were miserable and some live. Not much else he can do this turn.

Magnus turn 1. Everybody moves up, the trenchers dig in.

 

Kara Sloan turn 1. Kara is overwhelmed by the amount of models on the table and decides not to feat this turn despite seeing an opportunity to remove two warjacks. There's just too many models and Kara is going to save the feat for a potential assassination.

Magnus turn 2.
Magnus turn 2. Boomhowlers ambush from the side and run in. Trenchers move up and pop smoke clouds. Magnus with Escort up climbs the hill. On the left flank the Steelhead Halberdiers were able to run and engage two hunters.

 

 

Kara Sloan turn 2. Thankfully Magnus is ontop of a hill so literally everything can see him. Reinholdt reloads Kara, she pops feat and casts Guided Fire and everything fires and puts Magnus2 in the dirt. It wasn't until after this game that we remembered a benefit of Kingmaker theme is "feign death" and we discussed that if a Nomad were to headbutt Magnus then this list would stomp many Sloan lists.
